It says 24,630 applicants are being accepted through the time cut-off and another 1,000 are being selected through the new Boston Qualifier Selection. Notices have started, but will continue over the coming days.
What changed on 29 September
The B.A.A.’s acceptance announcement replaces the uncertainty described in the previous version of this article. The organisation now reports 33,649 qualifier applications after verification, seven fewer than the 33,656 initially announced on 21 September. All figures remain preliminary while performances are verified.
- 24,630 applicants are accepted through a verified time meeting the 5:17 cut-off.
- 1,000 additional qualifiers are in the process of being randomly selected.
- 8,019 qualifier applicants were unable to be accepted.
- 25,630 qualified applicants are accepted or in the process of being accepted in total.
The arithmetic reconciles: 24,630 + 1,000 + 8,019 = 33,649. Dividing by the application total gives a preliminary 73.2% time-cut-off acceptance share and 76.2% when the 1,000 selection places are included. Those percentages describe this applicant pool; they are not the odds for an individual runner and do not predict a future year.
How to apply the 5:17 cut-off to your result
Start with the qualifying standard for your age and gender on race day, 19 April 2027. Then subtract 5:17. For example, if the published standard is 3:00:00, the time-cut-off line is 2:54:43:
3:00:00 − 0:05:17 = 2:54:43
The official qualification page says qualification uses official net, or chip, time and age on race day. The B.A.A. verifies submitted performances. Do not substitute a watch time or gun time for the official result.
The B.A.A. announcement uses both “5:17 or faster” and “faster than 5:17” in different passages. If your verified margin is exactly 5:17, rely on your Athletes’ Village status and official email rather than trying to resolve that wording yourself.
Downhill-course indexes still change the calculation
For 2027 registration, the B.A.A. introduced adjustments for courses with large net elevation drops:
- 1,500–2,999 ft (457.2–914.1 m) net drop: add 5:00 to the verified result.
- 3,000–5,999 ft (914.2–1,828.5 m) net drop: add 10:00.
- 6,000 ft (1,828.6 m) or more: the result is not eligible for Boston qualification.
Example: a runner with a 3:00:00 standard runs 2:49:30 on a course subject to the five-minute index. The adjusted result is 2:54:30, a verified margin of 5:30. That is 13 seconds inside a 2:54:43 time-cut-off line. The B.A.A., not the runner, determines the applicable course index and verifies the final result.
What the 1,000-place selection means
The Boston Qualifier Selection is new for 2027. The B.A.A. says it applies to qualifying applicants who were not faster than the 5:17 cut-off. A total of 1,000 are being randomly selected and will receive notices over the coming days.
The B.A.A. has not published the size of the eligible selection pool in this announcement, so a defensible selection probability cannot be calculated. Dividing 1,000 by 8,019 would be misleading: 8,019 is the reported number unable to be accepted, not necessarily the pre-selection denominator.
If an email has not arrived yet
- Check Athletes’ Village and the email account used to apply. Include spam and promotions folders.
- Allow for processing time. The B.A.A. says acceptance and non-acceptance notices will continue over the coming days.
- Read a card charge correctly. A temporary preauthorisation is not an acceptance. The B.A.A. charges the entry fee only after verification and acceptance.
- Do not reapply. Qualifier registration will not reopen for the 2027 race.
- Keep travel flexible until status is official. A calculated margin is useful, but the B.A.A. account and email are the decision.
What 33,649 does—and does not—say about demand
The total field is set at 30,000, but qualifier applications are only one part of it. Invitational entrants, charity runners, professional athletes and Para athletes also occupy places. That is why subtracting 30,000 from 33,649 never produced the cut-off.
The accepted time-qualified group currently includes runners from 120 countries. The five most common qualifying races were the 2026 Boston Marathon (4,448 accepted entrants), 2025 Chicago Marathon (2,043), 2025 New York City Marathon (826), 2025 California International Marathon (812) and 2026 London Marathon (610). These are accepted-entrant counts, not evidence that any one course guarantees a better chance.
Bottom line
The waiting question now has a concrete answer: the 2027 Boston Marathon cut-off is 5:17. A verified margin beyond that line leads to time-based acceptance, subject to final verification. The new 1,000-place selection gives some slower-than-cut-off applicants another route, but its individual odds cannot be calculated from the figures released.
